You can't keep Porthpean sailors away from the water for long and so it was that 21 of us took to the water for an afternoon with a difference.
Tony organised a river trip from Fowey to Lerryn, which coincided with the end of Fowey regatta week. The group gathered on Fowey Town quay among crowds of folk enjoying the rowing regatta held in glorious weather. At 3pm once aboard the vessel "BEEF'R" the group was transported through the many sailing vessels in Fowey harbour, heading upriver to the village of Lerryn, on a rising tide.
It's really nice to see the different aspects of the shoreline from the water. Out past the Bodinnick Ferry crossing and the Imerys china clay docks. Soon the village of Golant was visible and the quieter reaches of the river. John Barker, the owner and Captain of our boat, every so often slowed the boat and gave us snippets of information about our surroundings. It was along this quiet stretch of water that John allowed Thomas Daza to take the wheel ( under supervision and I hardly felt a thing! ). After about 3/4 hour John brought us alongside the small mooring at Lerryn.
Then it was decision time...... Sit in the sunshine with a soothing cuppa, Stretch ones legs with a leisurely walk, or visit The Ship Inn !! All options were taken up I might add. At 4.45pm all gathered back at the boat for the return trip. Above a calm stretch of water Tony even arranged for a Kingfisher to be perched on a low branch, what a treat, before it flew off.
On arriving back at Fowey, the boat did a circuit of the harbour taking in the shoreline of Polruan and the mouth of the river where it meets the sea. Back to Town Quay and dry land. Tony had pre-booked a table at The Ship inn, Polmear, Par, for an early evening meal and so at 6.30pm half the group sat down to a welcome meal and jovial banter, before dispersing for home.
The afternoon had been good in several ways. The mixed summer weather had been kind. The trip had been a success and another Social Outing ticked off the list. Some photo's were taken during the afternoon by Ken & me, click on any to enlarge.
